Strengthening the Southern Border
Since President Donald Trump took office on January 20, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), under the leadership of Secretary Kristi Noem, has made significant strides in enhancing border security. Nearly 78 miles of new border barriers have been constructed, a milestone Noem highlighted during a House Appropriations Committee hearing this week. These barriers, which include steel bollard fencing, temporary fencing, and water buoys, are part of a broader effort to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and address illegal crossings.
The construction of these barriers marks a continuation of Trump's commitment to border security, building on the 458 miles of primary and secondary barriers erected during his first term. Noem emphasized the strategic use of different barrier types, noting that steel bollards are suitable for some areas, while buoys are necessary in regions with bodies of water like the Rio Grande. This tailored approach aims to maximize effectiveness across the diverse terrain of the 1,954-mile southwest border.
Contracts and Infrastructure Expansion
The Trump administration has moved swiftly to advance border wall construction. Contracts for an additional 40 miles of barriers have already been awarded, signaling a robust pipeline of projects. Noem told lawmakers that the administration is also installing more cameras in areas where physical barriers may be impractical, enhancing surveillance to deter illegal activity. 'We're going to continue to move forward with putting up that infrastructure because it does slow down traffic, it sends a message, and it gives our officers more opportunities to truly address the security concerns that we've had in the past,' Noem stated.
One notable project includes a $70 million contract awarded to Granite Construction Co. for seven miles of new border wall in the Rio Grande Valley Sector, announced earlier this year. This contract, the first of Trump's second term, underscores the administration's focus on high-traffic areas prone to illegal crossings and smuggling. The DHS has also waived environmental regulations to expedite construction, such as a recent waiver for 2.5 miles of new barrier in California, allowing work to begin immediately near Jacumba Hot Springs.
Leadership and Commitment
Secretary Noem has been a vocal advocate for border security, aligning closely with Trump's vision. During a visit to Nogales, Arizona, in March, she announced the resumption of wall construction, stating, 'Everybody, I'm here in Arizona, and right at this spot you can see where the border wall ends. As of today, we're starting seven new miles of construction. We're going to continue to make America safe again.' Her leadership has been instrumental in driving the administration's border security agenda, with daily border encounters reportedly dropping 95% since January.
Noem's efforts extend beyond physical barriers. She has overseen the arrest and deportation of over 150,000 aliens, including more than 600 members of the Tren de Aragua gang, and signed agreements with countries like El Salvador and Colombia to enhance biometric data sharing and fugitive tracking. These measures aim to prevent criminals from entering American communities, reinforcing the administration's commitment to public safety.
Looking Ahead
The Trump administration has requested $47 billion from Congress to fund further border wall construction, with the House Homeland Security Committee recently advancing a measure to support this funding. The cost of constructing new barriers or replacing existing ones averages $6.5 million per mile, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). With 85 miles of new construction either planned or underway, the administration is on track to significantly expand the border barrier system.
Vice President JD Vance has expressed optimism about completing a wall across the entire southern border by 2029, a goal that reflects the administration's long-term vision. As Noem continues to lead DHS, her focus on rapid construction, strategic infrastructure, and international cooperation signals a comprehensive approach to securing the nation’s borders.
