USDA Raises Concerns Over Listeria in HelloFresh Meals
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a public health alert regarding potential listeria contamination in certain HelloFresh subscription meals containing spinach. This warning targets ready-made meals produced by FreshRealm, a California-based company in San Clemente, which supplies HelloFresh with ingredients. The alert comes amid a broader investigation into listeria outbreaks linked to pre-made food products, emphasizing the need for consumer vigilance.
The specific products flagged by the USDA include 10.1-ounce containers of HelloFresh Ready Made Meals Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and 10-ounce containers of HelloFresh Ready Made Meals Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey. These meals were shipped directly to consumers, and the USDA urges anyone with these items to discard them immediately. The pork pepper pasta can be identified by establishment number Est. 47718 with lot code 49107 or Est. 2937 with lot code 48840, while the unstuffed peppers with ground turkey carry Est. P-47718 with lot codes 50069, 50073, or 50698.
Health Risks and Ongoing Investigation
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria found in the spinach used in these meals, can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and severe digestive issues. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered the contamination through routine testing reported by FreshRealm, though no illnesses have been directly linked to these specific products as of the alert date.
The investigation is part of a larger effort to address listeria outbreaks tied to heat-and-eat meals. The USDA has indicated that the recall may expand as they continue to assess the scope of contamination. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and freezers for the affected products and to avoid consuming them under any circumstances.
Consumer Safety and Company Response
HelloFresh, a popular meal subscription service, is cooperating with the USDA and FreshRealm to address the issue. The company has initiated a recall of the affected meals, focusing on ensuring customer safety. While specific details on the number of impacted meals or distribution areas were not disclosed in the alert, the USDA emphasizes the importance of public awareness to prevent potential health risks.
For those who rely on convenient meal kits, this alert serves as a reminder to stay informed about food safety notices. The USDA continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages consumers to report any concerns or adverse reactions related to these products. Protecting public health remains the top priority as federal officials work to contain this potential threat.
