Check the Refrigerator Before You Open Another Container
If there is a tub of pico de gallo, guacamole or salsa in your refrigerator, read the label before you open it. The Food and Drug Administration has tied 345 illnesses from an outbreak strain of Salmonella Javiana in 27 states to fresh jalapeños, with 36 people hospitalized and no deaths. Illnesses started between June 19, 2026 and July 20, 2026. The agency's instruction is plain: "Consumers who have purchased the affected products should not consume them but discard the products or return them to the place of purchase."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it the same way, telling consumers, "Do not eat recalled jalapeño peppers. Throw them out or return them." The agency also says to wash items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled jalapeño peppers, using hot soapy water or a dishwasher. Cases have been reported in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Who Gets Hit Hardest, and What to Watch For
Most people with a Salmonella infection have watery diarrhea, which might have blood or mucus, along with fever and stomach cramps that can be severe, according to the CDC. Some also have headache, nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite. Symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after infection and last 4 to 7 days.
The agency lists the groups most likely to get severely ill: children younger than 5, and especially those younger than 1; adults 50 years and older who have underlying medical problems such as heart disease; adults 65 and older; people with a weakened immune system; and international travelers. If you ate one of these products and have severe symptoms, that risk profile is the reason to call a doctor rather than wait it out.

Whole Foods Market Counters and Prepared Foods
Whole Foods Market announced a recall of select salsas, guacamole, pico de gallo and prepared foods on August 12, 2026. The items were sold online and in Produce and Prepared Foods departments in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Ohio, with Best Before or Best By dates of 8/7/2026 through 8/16/2026.
The recall covers Salsa Fresca Medium, Salsa Roja Medium and Pineapple Mango Salsa Mild, along with Mild and Spicy Guacamole Dip No Tomatoes in various sizes, Medium Pico de Gallo Guacamole Dip and pico de gallo. Store-made items carry PLU codes rather than UPCs, and the notice lists Mild Guacamole Dip variants under PLUs 21211600000, 21501700000, 25705700000, 25926000000 and 25054100000, among other items, with dates running 8/7/2026 through 8/12/2026 or 8/9/2026 through 8/14/2026 depending on the item.
The List Is Still Growing
The jalapeños trace back to a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, supplying Coast Citrus Distributors, which recalled fresh jalapeños sent to wholesalers and restaurants rather than directly to grocery stores. The FDA said in its August 14, 2026 update that it "is working with Coast Citrus Distributors to determine the full distribution of these products," and that the advisory will be updated as more information comes in.
Meat and poultry products made with the same peppers are covered by a separate public health alert issued August 8, 2026 by the Food Safety and Inspection Service, which said it "expects additional downstream products will be identified as this ingredient recall progresses." Taylor Fresh Foods said on August 9, 2026 that it "is no longer sourcing products from this farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers." On the restaurant side, Chipotle switched suppliers beginning July 20, 2026 and QDOBA stopped using the peppers on July 28, 2026, and the FDA said it does not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from those establishments.
How to Handle the Container in Your Hand
Match the package in front of you against the brand, size, code and date above. If it matches, do not eat it. Federal investigators say to throw it out or take it back to the store, and Consumer Reports advises discarding recalled products immediately and seeking a refund at the store where you bought them. Then clean the shelf, the container it sat in and any cutting board or knife that touched it with hot soapy water or run them through the dishwasher.
Keep checking. This recall started with one ingredient and has moved outward through the companies that bought it, adding new brands each week. Anyone in the higher-risk groups the CDC names, including adults 65 and older and adults 50 and older with conditions such as heart disease, should treat a bad stomach upset in the days after eating one of these products as a reason to contact a doctor rather than something to ride out.
